Solstice Canyon Engagement | Courtney + Derek

One of the raddest things about living near the coast is the accessibility I have to epic places. A lot of them come at a price I don’t agree with nor would I ever want my couples to deal with. This is why I’m always on the hunt for new exciting ways to rock places I always shoot at. Such is the case with this SOLSTICE CANYON ENGAGEMENT. Now usually when I rock SOLSTICE CANYON we always follow it up at EL MATADOR BEACH because of how close it is and how it adds so much to the experience.

When going to SOLSTICE CANYON you want to make sure you get there early enough to avoid the crowd. There are not a lot of parking spots so if you arrive at peak hiking times you end up circling around the lot for 10-15 minutes. It’s not too bad but why waste time right? Right off the bat when arriving there are some great shots to get that are a little woodsy. I’ll usually spend about 10 minutes here trying some new stuff out and just getting a couple comfy with the shoot. Once we finish that up we head up the trail to some more interesting spots. This time I found a pretty sweet one off the beaten path where these giant trees had fallen and created some great curves.

Further up the trail leads to an old abandoned house that’s really fun to shoot but we needed to save our energy and head down to EL MATADOR BEACH.

The key to ALWAYS getting epic shit at EL MATADOR is to go during the weekday. Yes there will still be others doing shoots there but at least you can carve out your own sections and not have to deal with 100 photographers all waiting for the one money spot. I will always, always, always try to get EL MATADOR sessions scheduled for weekdays. We lucked out and pretty much had our run without too long of a wait for anything. The tides were a little low so I was able to grab one shot that has always eluded me and we caught some birds in the pic as a fun bonus.

A great couple + some epic locations = that good stuff for our SOLSTICE CANYON ENGAGEMENT.
